Scaling also called as deep cleaning is a treatment used to treat gum diseases. Scaling involves thoroughly removing all the plaque, bacterial toxins and tartar deposits from teeth.

What is the procedure involved in Scaling and Polishing?

  • Scaling – procedure involving crown portion and soft tissue surrounding the crown of the tooth. Dentist uses a specialized cleaning device called an ultrasonic scaler to remove the plaque and calculus on the crown portion of the tooth.
  • Polishing – procedure involving removal of the irregularities present on the tooth surface. It aids in less retention of plaque and debris. Dentist uses a special polishing kit.
  • The end result of scaling and polishing is removal of irritants so that your mouth gets a fresh feeling and the polishing of your teeth ensures that your smile gets even more radiant and sparkling than ever.

How much time is required for the procedure?

Depending on the condition of the patient and severity treatment duration will range form 1– 2 hours. Can split the treatment duration to 2 appointments.

What are the things to do after scaling and polishing?

  • Consume soft and cold foods for 1-2 days and avoid hot and spicy foods for 1-2 days.
  • Limit intake of foods with stain tendency like coffee and tea.
  • Limit intake of acidic foods and beverages.

When to undergo scaling and polishing? Once in every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist.
